MFA visits UAE to Learn About New Initiatives on Migration
— March 21, 2018MFA organized a field visit to Dubai, United Arab Emirates(UAE) on 17-20 February 2018. The field visit and consultation was organized by MFA and facilitated by the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MOHRE). The MFA delegation were composed of participants from Philippines, Bahrain, India, Sri Lanka, Indonesia and Nepal.
Given the recent policy and program changes in the UAE the field visit aimed to observe and study the new initiatives by MOHRE to promote safe migration, living conditions of migrant workers and assistance extended to domestic workers. Durign the program, participants also had the opportunity to discuss objectives of the Global Compact for Migration (GCM) as pertaining to UAE context and also follow up on the recommendation of CSOs in the Abu Dhabi Dialogue.
During the program the delegates visited the Dubai Foundation for Women and Children, the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MOHRE), Tadbeer Centre, and workers accommedations udner the WAFI Group. Sharing with you photos of the field visit.
The visit to the Tadbeer centre aimed to understand their roles, responsibilities and functioning in the larger context of the labour system. These centres are private companies working in conjunction with government, The centre visited by the delegation was previously known as Housekeeping Co. It provides domestic work services on a temporary or a live-in basis.
The visit of the delegation to the Wafi Group Labour Accommodation was under the guidance of MOHRE officials, HR department officials and Labour Inspectors. Wafi Group is considered by them among the best employers that provide all services and amenities for their labour. The delegation were shown apartments that are shared by blue collared workers (male accommodation) as well as frontline staff (mostly female accommodation). Workers passports are kept at the HR department for safe-keeping. The delegation along with MOHRE officials that accompanied were able to understand the work timings, company policy on labour accommodation and rules that govern the accommodation building.
