A Critical Civil Society Perspective of Regular Migration Pathways: Rights, Realities, And Resistance
The global narrative surrounding regular migration pathways presents them as the humane alternative to irregular migration – a solution that promises order, safety, and mutual benefit. However, from the perspective of civil society organizations and migrant rights advocates, particularly in the Global South, this narrative obscures a much harsher reality. What governments and international institutions frame as “managed migration” often translates into systems of controlled exploitation, where migrants’ rights remain secondary to economic interests and border control agendas (Migrant Forum in Asia, 2022). The International Organization for Migration’s (IOM) own data reveals that 34% of migrant workers in regular programs report experiencing labour rights violations, challenging the assumption that formality guarantees protection (IOM World Migration Report, 2023).
