PRESS CONFERENCE

Calling PH to Ratify ILO Convention 189

15 April 2012, Sunday, 11:10 AM – 12:00 NN

3rd Floor, Seminar Room, Caritas Building, Miriam College

Katipunan Avenue, Diliman, Quezon City

MANILA, Philippines – Around 70 representatives from the domestic workers movements, trade unions, migrants advocates, CSOs and faith-based groups from 14 countries in Asia will gather in Manila for a 2-day Conference which will start on 14 April to pressure the Philippine government to speed up the process of ratification of ILO Convention 189 on Decent Work for Domestic Workers and champion the ratification of the Convention in the region.

While the Philippine government has been very vocal with its interest to ratify the Convention as declared during the adoption of the Convention on 16 June 2011 at the 100th Session of the International Labour Conference, the process has been very slow.

The Convention requires 2 ratifications within 12 months after its adoption for it to take effect which becomes very critical for the Philippines to speed up the ratification.

The Conference is a follow-up to the October 2011 Regional Conference also held in Manila where an alliance of domestic workers groups, trade unions, migrants advocates and civil society organizations was forged to spearhead the ratification of ILO C189 in the Asian region.

Members of the media are invited to understand why the Philippine government needs to ratify the ILO C189.
