PH Ready to Host World Summit on Migration
— November 22, 2012MANILA, Philippines – More than a thousand international and local activists are expected to participate in the upcoming 5th World Social Forum on Migration (WSFM), a summit and joint action of civil society, social movements and activist groups addressing migration and development issues around the world, on 26-28 November 2012 at the Miriam College.
According to the Migrant Forum in Asia (MFA), technical secretariat of the event, the Philippines is the first to host it in Asia with the previous conferences held in Brazil in 2005, Spain in 2006 and 2008, and in Ecuador in 2010.
For a country touted to be the top worker-exporting country in any part of the world, the Philippines was chosen to be the WSFM’s landing pad in Asia, the MFA said.
Participants are expected to engage in debates, consensus-building, share experiences and strategies of OFWs, gather insights from the experiences of OFWs and other migrant workers in top migrant home and hosts countries, discuss plans and strategies on migration and mobility-related issues, and organize cultural exchange, field visits, rallies, concerts, socialization, and networking.
