{"id":3846,"date":"2020-05-25T01:20:11","date_gmt":"2020-05-25T01:20:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mfasia.org\/?p=3846"},"modified":"2026-09-30T02:52:26","modified_gmt":"2026-09-29T18:52:26","slug":"iom-migrant-forum-in-asia-partner-to-promote-the-rights-of-migrant-workers-in-international-supply-chains","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mfasia.org\/migrantforumasia\/iom-migrant-forum-in-asia-partner-to-promote-the-rights-of-migrant-workers-in-international-supply-chains\/","title":{"rendered":"IOM, Migrant Forum in Asia Partner to Promote the Rights of Migrant Workers in International Supply Chains"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<ul class=\"wp-block-gallery columns-1 is-cropped wp-block-gallery-1 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\">\n<li class=\"blocks-gallery-item\">\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-3848\" src=\"http:\/\/mfasia.org\/migrantforumasia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Press-release-May-2020-project-launch-1024x576.png\" alt=\"\" data-id=\"3848\" data-link=\"http:\/\/mfasia.org\/?attachment_id=3848\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Ho Chi Minh City<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 As the COVID-19 pandemic increases vulnerabilities of migrant workers across the globe, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) has joined forces with the\u00a0Migrant Forum in Asia (MFA) to promote the voice of migrant workers and tackle labour exploitation in supply chains across Asia and the Pacific.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although migration is recognized as an important driver of development within the Sustainable Development Goals, the human and labour rights of migrant workers are too often not respected by the actors involved in their recruitment and employment.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During COVID-19, the vulnerabilities of migrant workers have increased significantly with many\u00a0living\u00a0and working under conditions that make social distancing and seeking medical attention difficult. While many countries have introduced lockdown measures, many migrant workers have lost their jobs and incomes, are stranded, unable to return home or continue employment. This has led to many migrant workers falling into irregular status,\u00a0overstaying their work visas, and ultimately failing to pay off debts accumulated through recruitment or support families back home.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">MFA, a regional network of migrants and migrants\u2019 rights advocates, working on social justice for migrant workers, and IOM, the UN Migration Agency, working to promote well-managed migration globally, are now bringing together their expertise and strong regional presence to work for and with migrant workers.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The partnership will focus on community-based approaches to enhance migrant workers\u2019 access to ethical recruitment, decent working and living conditions and effective remedy. More specifically, IOM and MFA will seek to develop innovative approaches to support businesses to better respect the rights of migrant workers in their operations.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cCivil society organizations are trusted by migrant workers and their communities.\u00a0Governments, businesses and international organizations can learn and benefit from the experience and knowledge of civil society organizations representing migrant workers voices,\u201d said\u00a0Miah Park, Chief of Mission, IOM Viet Nam.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She added,\u00a0\u201cThe MFA is a long-term partner of IOM, and we look forward to strengthening our collaboration to end exploitation of migrant workers in international supply chains.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;The vulnerabilities of migrant workers exposed during the COVID-19 pandemic only strengthens our conviction and commitment to build back better systems of accountability, transparency, and management of the recruitment process. To support our approach to private sector engagement, MFA welcomes this partnership with IOM,&#8221;\u00a0said William\u00a0Gois, MFA.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Through the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/crest.iom.int\/\">Corporate Responsibility in Eliminating Slavery and Trafficking (CREST)<\/a>\u00a0initiative and the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/iris.iom.int\/\">International Recruitment Integrity System (IRIS)<\/a>,\u00a0IOM strives to enhance the protection of the human and labour rights of migrant workers in international supply chains.
