Launch of Repatriation Studies of Bangladesh, India, and Sri Lanka

Launch of Repatriation Studies of Bangladesh, India, and Sri Lanka

Migrant Forum in Asia (MFA) together with Refugee and Migratory Movements Research Unit (RMMRU), Centre for Indian Migrant Studies Kerala (CIMS), and Lawyers Beyond Borders Sri Lanka (LBB-SL) conducted three studies to assess the conditions of migrants, the support or services provided, and the repatriation experience, beginning from the time they are still in their CODs, to transit, to the time they arrived back in the COOs and post-repatriation. The pandemic saw a significantly higher number of migrants who needed to return home to COOs because of the conditions generated or exacerbated by COVID-19. Repatriation in this context also went beyond mere transportation and administrative assistance, having other challenges and concerns attached which demanded consideration and addressing – health and safety, job loss, nonpayment of wages, and more.

A Virtual Launch for the three studies was held last 4 October 2020. Findings and recommendations of the three studies were given by Chowdhury Abrar (Executive Director, RMMRU), Akhil CS (Research Lead, CIMS), and Sujeewa Lal Dahanayake (LBB-SL).
