Statement on the execution of Rizana Nafeek

Rizana Nafeek, a Sri Lankan migrant domestic worker was beheaded in Saudi Arabia on January 9 for the accidental death of an infant under her care when she was 17 years old in 2005.

MFA stands in solidarity with human rights organizations and advocates who have struggled to save Rizana’s life and defend her human right to life. As you may recall, a lot of appeals have been sent out by various human rights organizations and advocates to the King of Saudi Arabia to overturn the sentence and grant her a clemency. International pressures were also directed to the government of Sri Lanka to save Rizana’s life.

The following are statements by MFA members and partners on Rizana’s execution endorsed by migrants rights and domestic workers’ rights networks:

Law and Society Trust

Women and Media Collective and ACTFORM
