“Research on Sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, and sex characteristics and its implications for migrant workers: A study on perceptions, attitudes and freedom from violence, harassment and discrimination”
Social Research and Development by PHI Corporation is welcoming 2021 with a new research project on LGBTI+ migrant workers.
Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, more than two million Filipinos have migrated internationally primarily for economic or employment purposes. However, the actual number of LGBTI+ OFWs is still unknown since population data of migrant workers are still categorized as males and females only. Consequently, leaving LGBTI+ migrants vulnerable to exploitation and discrimination on the basis of their SOGIESC.
The UNHRC’s research further validated the disadvantages that LGBTI+ migrants experience—as victims of violence and sexual abuse within the different stages of their migration and while working in other countries. However, there is still very limited narratives on the actual experiences of LGBTI+ migrant workers all over the world. Hence, this research aims to capture the unique yet diverse experiences of LGBTI+ migrant workers in different countries working in various sectors.
This project is being carried out by three organizations – Edge Effect, the ASEAN SOGIE Caucus, and Migrant Forum in Asia. In the Philippines, PHI Corporation is responsible for the invitation and call for participants to join on the interview and/or small group discussions. We ensure the strict adherence to our research code of conduct regarding confidentiality for participants.
We are looking for:
-
Filipino citizens over 18 who identify as LGBTI or of diverse SOGIESC
-
Former or current OFWs* (ideally to ASEAN or Asian countries)
*Including workers who used official and unofficial labour migration channels.
PHI Corporation would really appreciate your support in (1) signing up for the research and/or (2) referring suitable individuals
The research team will directly contact individuals who signed up. Thank you!
